Gopher Soccer Team Falls to Ohio State in Season Finale

On a soggy night in Columbus, Ohio, the University of Minnesota soccer team saw its season end with a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Ohio State. Kaitlin Wagner scored the lone goal for Minnesota in the 84th minute, but the Buckeyes found the back of the net three times in the second half to improve to 10-7-1 on the season and 5-5 in the Big Ten. The Golden Gophers finished their season 8-9-2 overall on 1-8-1 in the Big Ten.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Dare recorded 11 saves for her sixth double-digit save performance of the season, but the constant pressure from the Buckeyes was too much to overcome. OSU posted its first shot on goal just 40 seconds in and had a shot by Lara Dickenmann bounce off the post in the eighth minute.
The Buckeyes got on the board in the 12th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick after a Gopher foul inside the box off a set piece. Lisa Collison took the penalty kick and fired a shot toward the left post. Dare made a tremendous diving save on the initial shot, but the rebound came right back to Collison who chipped it in inside the right post to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead.
The Buckeyes continued to control the ball for much of the first half as they took 11 shots to Minnesota’s three. Lindsey Schwartz posted Minnesota’s first shot on goal in the 27th minute when she took a shot from the middle of the field from 25 yards out, but OSU goalkeeper Lauren Robertson made the save.
Dare made eight saves in the first half to keep the Gophers in the game, but Minnesota was unable to generate many scoring chances.
The Gophers came out in the second half looking to turn things around and freshman Jenny Green nearly connected in the 47th minute. Green took a pass on the right side of the field and fired a shot from just outside the box toward the far side of the net, but the ball skipped off the left post to keep Minnesota off the board.
Three minutes later, OSU’s Keiana Mitchell put the Buckeyes up 2-0 with a goal from inside the box. A scramble developed in front of the net after a corner kick and eventually fell to the feet of Mitchell chipped it in past Dare.
Collison extended the Ohio State lead in the 65th minute with a nice finish from inside the box. Caitlin Colfer chipped the ball in to Collison who got behind the Minnesota defense on the left side. Dare came out to challenge her, but Collison shot it over her head to the far post to give thee Buckeyes a 3-0 lead.
Lisa Grubb scored two minutes later to push the lead to 4-0. Grubb took a pass from Lara Dickenmann at the top of the box and fired a shot past Dare inside the right post.
Wagner got one back for Minnesota in the 84th minute with a shot from the top of the box that beat OSU goalkeeper Shannon Neely inside the right post. Wagner took a pass from Lindsey Schwartz and maneuvered into the middle of the field where she found an opening and fired a shot from 20 yards out to score her fifth goal of the season.
With the goal, Wagner finished the season with a team-leading 15 points, just ahead of Schwartz who had 14, including the assist in tonight’s game.
