Gophers Host Charlotte on Tuesday

Subway Basketball Classic This Weekend
Maine, Middle Tennessee State and Princeton join Minnesota in the field for the 2006 Subway Basketball Classic, Nov. 18-19, in Williams Arena. The Gophers will face Princeton in Saturday’s 3 p.m. game and then face either Maine or Middle Tennessee State in the 3 p.m. contest on Sunday. Maine and Middle Tennessee State will play Saturday’s Classic opening game at 1 p.m.
Spending Some Quality Time in The Barn
Starting the 2006-07 season, the Golden Gophers will play in the friendly confines of Williams Arena in seven of their first nine games, including the first five. Minnesota. The only road games during the stretch are two contests in the Northern Arizona Tournament over Thanksgiving.
Defending Their Home Court
Williams Arena has become one of the toughest places to play in for opposing teams in the nation. During Pam Borton’s coaching tenure, the Golden Gophers have compiled an impressive 24-1 (96%) in games against nonconference opponents. The one blemish on the Gophers’ record was a loss to then-No. 1 ranked LSU in December of 2004. The 24-1 record includes a 4-0 mark in the NCAA Tournament.
Add Another Season-Opening “W”
WIth the Gophers’ 75-63 season-opening win over Northern Iowa, Minnesota has now won its season-opening games in each of the last seven seasons, including victories to start each season during the tenure of Pam Borton. Overall, the Gophers are 21-13 in openers since 1973-74 (results from the first two years of basketball, 1971-72 and 1972-73, are unavailable).
Fox Posts First Double-Double in Two-Plus Seasons
Sophomore Emily Fox made her first collegiate start a memorable one recording the Golden Gophers’ first points/assists double-double in over two seasons. Fox scored 13 points and dished out 10 assists in the Minnesota win over Northern Iowa. The last Gopher to post a points/assists double-double was Lindsay Whalen in the 2004 NCAA Tournament game versus Boston College. For good measure, Fox added five rebounds to her stat line and didn’t turn over the ball a single time in 38 minutes of action. The Gophers will take a 10-0 assist-to-turnover ratio any time.
Youthful Gophers Take Care of the Basketball
At one key point in the second half of the Gophers’ season-opening win over Northern Iowa, Minnesota’s lineup on the court consisted of four freshmen and a sophomore. Even with youth on the court, Minnesota committed only nine turnovers in the game, with two coming on offensive fouls.
Trying to Steal the Show
In Minnesota’s system of high-octane offense and tenacious defense, steals will be a good indicator of the Gophers’ success. Minnesota benefitted from a 9-1 advantage in steals versus Northern Iowa. Six different Gophers grabbed steals, with Emily Fox, Brittany McCoy and Ashley Ellis-Milan all collecting two.
Ohm Scores 15 in Gopher Debut
Gopher fans were looking forward to seeing Katie Ohm, Minnesota’s all-time leading high school scorer (girls and boys) with 3,694 career points at Elgin-Millville High School, take to the court wearing maroon and gold. After enduring a redshirt season in 2005-06, Ohm scored a team-high 15 points in the season-opening win versus Northern Iowa.
