Minnesota Series/Specialty Notes
• Glen Mason is now 64-56 all time at Minnesota and 123-120-1 in his career.
• Today’s game marked the 100th meeting between Minnesota and Iowa dating back to 1891. The Golden Gophers holds a 59-39-2 advantage in the all-time series.
• Today’s game marked the 72nd time the two schools have played for the “Floyd of Rosedale” trophy, dating back to 1935. Minnesota now leads the all-time battle for the pig, 39-31-2.
• Today’s attendance of 64,940 was the largest crowd of the season and the largest since drawing 65,089 to the Metrodome on Oct. 15, 2005 against Wisconsin.
Minnesota Team Notes
• Eleven seniors – Joe Ainslie, Trumaine Banks, Brad Bultman, Patrick Cheney, Eric Clark, Bryan Cupito, Jeremy Faue, Logan Payne, Mario Reese, Matt Spaeth and Tyson Swaggert – played their final home game in a Golden Gopher uniform.
• With today’s win, this senior class follows the class of 2005 in becoming only the second class to lead the Minnesota football program to four consecutive bowl games. This class is also the first class in school history to have members a part of five straight bowl seasons.
• The Gopher seniors have been part of a program that has currently won 30 games, the second-most wins in the program’s history over a four-year in the last 100 seasons, surpassed only by last year’s group that won 32 games. The last time Minnesota earned more than 32 wins over a four-year span was from 1902-1905 when the Gophers won 46 games.
• Minnesota’s defense forced multiple turnovers in a game for the sixth straight week and the eighth time this season. The Gophers have forced at least one turnover in seven straight games and 10 of 12 this season.
• The Gophers recorded multiple interceptions in a game for the third straight week and the fifth time this season. Minnesota picked off three passes in a game for the third time this season.
• Minnesota has now forced 11 turnovers over the last three games. The Gophers opened the 2006 season by forcing 10 turnovers in the first three games. Prior to that, the last time Minnesota forced 10 turnovers over a three-game stretch was Nov. 21, 1998-Sept. 11, 1999.
• Minnesota’s four interceptions were the most in a single game since they had the same number against Iowa on Nov. 21, 1998.
• Minnesota’s 16 interceptions on the season are the most since the team had 18 in 1993.
• Minnesota scored a touchdown on its first possession of the game for the seventh time this season.
• Minnesota now has had at least one rushing touchdown in 49 of their past 53 games.
Minnesota Individual Notes
• Bryan Cupito moved into second place all-time in career completions, surpassing Asad Abdul-Khaliq (2000-03), who had 481 career completions, and in career pass attempts, moving past Marquel Fleetwood (1989-92), who had 876 career completions. Cupito now has 506 completions on 875 attempts during his career.
• Cupito surpassed 7,000-yard passing mark for his career in the second quarter. He is the only quarterback in school history to reach that milestone. Cupito now has 7,183 passing yards for his career.
• With his two TD passes, Cupito has thrown for multiple touchdowns seven times this season and 17 times during his career.
• Amir Pinnix surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the season with a seven-yard run in the first quarter. It is the eighth straight season in which the Gophers have had a 1,000-yard rusher. Pinnix now has 1,093 yards rushing on the season.
• Pinnix had his second multi-touchdown game of the season and of his career. He now has nine touchdowns on the season.
• Ernie Wheelwright’s 64-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter matched his longest of the season and second longest of his career. He also had a 64-yard TD catch two weeks ago against Indiana.
• With the catch, Wheelwright moved into sole possession of third place in career TD receptions with 16. He now has four TD catches in the last three games.
• Mike Sherels’ recorded his second interception in the last three games late in the second quarter. He now has three interceptions in his career.
• Willie VanDeSteeg forced the first fumble of his career in the first quarter on Iowa’s opening possession. Mario Reese recovered it for his second fumble recovery of the season and of his career. His first came in the season opener at Kent State.
• Kevin Mannion and Mario Reese each recorded the first interceptions of their careers in the third quarter.
• Mannion also recorded the first pass breakup of his career in the fourth quarter.
• Justin Kucek’s 58-yard punt in the first quarter was the second-longest of his career. His longest was a 59-yard boot against Penn State earlier this year.
• Jay Thomas scored a rushing touchdown for the third consecutive game with his two-yard score in the second quarter. Thomas now has four touchdowns in his career, all which have come in the last three weeks.
• Thomas had his first career reception in the second quarter for a 49-yard gain.
• Joel Monroe scored his first point of the season with a PAT in the third quarter.
• Logan Payne had his 11th consecutive multiple-reception game.
• Matt Spaeth now has a catch in 20 consecutive games in which he has played.
• Spaeth had the 21st multi-catch game of his career.
• Spaeth’s touchdown in the third quarter was his fourth of the season and 12th of his career, moving him into a tie with Elmer Bailey (1977-79) for ninth-place all-time in career TD catches.
• Left tackle Steve Shidell has now started 23 consecutive games, the longest current starting streak on the team.
