The Minnesota volleyball team (23-7, 17-3) moved up to No. 9 in the CSTV/AVCA poll on Monday Nov. 27. Minnesota had 1,022 points in this week’s poll, which was its highest total of the season.
Minnesota’s No. 9 ranking was it’s highest since Oct. 10, 2005 when the Golden Gophers were also ranked No. 9 in the nation.
The Golden Gophers have now been ranked in 72 of the last 80 top 25 polls dating back to the 2002 season. Minnesota has also been ranked the last nine weeks, moving up to No. 9 this week from No. 10. The Golden Gophers also ranked No. 22 in this year’s preseason poll.
This past week Minnesota went 2-0, claiming a pair of three-game sweeps on the road against No. 22 Purdue and Indiana.
With the pair of victories, the Golden Gophers clinched second place in the Big Ten at 17-3. The 17-3 record tied their best Big Ten mark in school history. Minnesota was also 17-3 in 2000, 20002 and 2004. It also marked the sixth time in eight years that the Golden Gophers finished second or higher in the Big Ten.
There were five Big Ten teams ranked in the top 25 this week. Penn State was the highest ranked team at No. 5, followed by No. 9 Minnesota, No. 10 Wisconsin, No. 18 Ohio State, and No. 22 Purdue.
Those rankings were translated in the NCAA Tournament draw, as the Golden Gophers received a No. 8 overall seed (No. 2 in the region). The No. 8 seed was Minnesota’s third top eight seed nationally in the tournament in the past five years. Penn State was also seeded No. 5, while Wisconsin was No. 10, Ohio State was No. 11 and Purdue was No. 14. Michigan and Michigan also made it into the tournament from the Big Ten.
