University of Minnesota women’s basketball coach Pam Borton announced today that South Bend, Ind., native Kristen Dockery has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Golden Gophers. Dockery will join the Gophers for the 2007-08 season.
A three-time Street & Smith High School Honorable Mention All-American, Dockery is a 6-4 forward from St. Joseph High School in South Bend. Dockery is ranked as No. 59 by the Blue Star Index and was recognized by the Indiana High School Basketball Guide’s Tremendous 26 Selections.
“This is an exciting day for our program to sign a quality student-athlete in Kristen Dockery,” said Borton, who has led the Golden Gophers to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances and the 2004 Final Four. “Doc is a good student, a person of great character and comes from an outstanding family environment. She comes from a very strong high school and a successful AAU program, both which have winning traditions and are committed to player development. Her basketball abilities are exciting and she will bring a lot to our program. Her versatility is her strength - she can play on the block or face the basket. She has very good fundamentals and a great work ethic. Her ability to run the floor, pass, shoot and her potential is very exciting for our team. She is committed to getting better and she will be the type of player who will be the first to the gym and the last to leave.”
Dockery kicked off her senior season in style, scoring a 20 points / 17 rebounds double-double while playing just over a half in St. Joseph’s season-opening game on Tuesday, a 77-53 victory over Oregon-Davis. St. Joseph’s is currently ranked No. 2 in Indiana Class 3A.
Dockery earned Hoosier Basketball Magazine Second-Team All-State honors after her junior season in which she averaged 11.6 points, 7.9 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and shot 61.3 percent from the field. She helped St. Joseph’s to a 22-3 record in 2005-06 before losing in the Class 3A Semi-State competition. In addition, she earned Northern Indiana Conference Second Team accord and was selected to the Adidias Top 10 All-Star Team.
As a sophomore, Dockery started on the St. Joseph squad that captured the 2005 Class 3A state title with a 25-1 record. She averaged 8.3 points, 5.3 and 2.0 blocks and earned Hoosier Basketball Magazine Honorable Mention All-State honors. Starting as a freshman, Dockery contributed 6.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.
