Golden Gopher Soccer Team Announces 2006 Team Awards

The University of Minnesota soccer team announced its team award winners for the 2006 season at its annual season-ending banquet on Sunday at the McNamara Alumni Center.
Sophomore Lindsey Schwartz was named the team’s Most Valuable Offensive Player for the second year in a row. Hailey McCarthy earned Most Valuable Defensive Player honors, while Kelsey Hood was the Most Valuable Midfielder. Freshmen Jenny Green and Kirsten Zachman shared the award for Most Improved Player. Other award recipients included Kaitlin Wagner (Coalminer Award), Sara Johnson (Super Sub Award) and Lindsey Dare (Rose Grimm Team Award).
In addition, the soccer program was presented the Gladys Brooks Team Award for having the most improved team GPA within the University of Minnesota Athletic Department. Six student-athletes were recognized for being named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team: Dare, Hood, Nikki Jensen, Marti Klinsing, McCarthy, and Wagner.
A sophomore from Bettendorf, Iowa, Schwartz earned her second offensive MVP award after tying for the team-lead with five goals and ranking second overall in total points with 14. Schwartz has started all 38 games of her collegiate career and has tallied 11 goals, nine assists and 31 total points over the last two seasons, all totals which either lead or are tied for the team-lead during that time.
The only upperclassmen to start all 19 games this season, McCarthy was undoubtedly the leader of the young Gopher defensive unit. A junior captain from Oregon City, Ore., she helped Minnesota post seven shutouts on the season and hold 14 of 19 opponents to one goal or fewer. Over the last two seasons, she has established a reputation of being one of the toughest defenders in the conference and is often asked to key on the opposing team’s top player. McCarthy has started all 56 games of her collegiate career.
Hood, a Second Team All-Big Ten selection, earned the team’s midfield MVP award for her performance on both sides of the ball. A sophomore from Ankeny, Iowa, she tied for second on the team with four assists and ranked fourth overall in scoring with eight total points. 

Also a major factor on the defensive end, Hood helped the Gophers post seven shutouts and hold 14 of 19 opponents to one goal or fewer. Hood has earned All-Big Ten honors in each of her first two years with the program. She was named to the All-Freshman Team last season.
Green and Zachman were two members of the top recruiting class in school history. A true freshman from Palatine, Ill., Green appeared in each of the final 13 games of the season for the Gophers and started five of the last six contests at forward. Zachman, a native of Mahtomedi, Minn., returned from an early season injury to play in the final 10 matches, starting each of the last six.
Wagner took home the Coalminer Award for the player who most embodies the work ethic sought by the program. A team captain in just her sophomore year, she finished the season as the team’s leading scorer with 15 total points on five goals and five assists. Johnson was named the team’s Super Sub for providing the biggest spark off the bench. She appeared in the first six games of the year before her season was cut short due to injury. Dare earned the Rose Grimm Team Award for the attitude and leadership she brought to the team. A sophomore captain from Apple Valley, Minn., Dare started in 13 games between the posts for Minnesota. She led the Big Ten Conference with 101 total saves and .894 save percentage.
