COACHES v. CONSULTANTS

As a reminder, it is permissible for the coaching staff to hire a temporary consultant to provide in-service training for the coaching staff. However, NCAA Bylaw 11.7.1.1.1.4 dictates that outside consultants may not interact with student-athletes in any capacity, on or off-field.

Consultants cannot participate in the following coaching activities without being counted as coach under NCAA rules:
  • Game planning
  • Attending meetings
  • Film study
  • Sport specific skill instruction
There is a distinguishing line between strength and conditioning personnel and outside consultants. A program may not hire an outside massage therapist or a pilates instructor to help develop strength and flexibility; such activity is permissible if the instructor is a U of M staff member.

Similarly, a program may not hire an outside visual acuity specialist to help improve athletic performance.  A permissible instructor must be a University staff member in order to work with our sport programs.  Again, these instructors may not provide sport-specific skill instruction. Skating instructors or speed coaches that are U of M staff members are allowed to teach skating technique or form running to improve strength and agility; however, they may not provide sport specific skill instruction that involves equipment other than skates.

We have had violations in this area each of the past few years and therefore we advise that anytime a sport is considering the use of anyone to work with your team please contact the Compliance Office to review the scenario.
