Six members of the Minnesota women’s track & field team garnered NCAA Regional qualifying marks in competition at the Stanford Nike Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., this weekend. Highlighting the Golden Gophers’ performance was senior Nina Cotolupenco, who gathered her regional qualifier in the hammer throw with a personal-best effort of 188 feet, 4 inches, the third-best mark in school history.

Cotolupenco’s winning throw was her first and only measured attempt of the competition. She fouled her other two throws in the prelims, then fouled all three of her attempts in the finals to finish in third place.

Heather Dorniden, the indoor national champion in the 800 meters, opened her freshman outdoor season by qualifying for the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in the 1,500-meter run. Dorniden placed eighth in the event with a time of 4 minutes, 23.22 seconds. Her time is the fifth-fastest 1,500m time in school history.

Two other throwers joined Cotolupenco with regional qualifying efforts. Liz Alabi landed her best throw of this young outdoor season in the shot put at 49-7 3/4 and placed fourth. Ruby Radocaj finished fifth in the javelin with her season high of 156-9.

The Minnesota distance crew had two runners qualify for regional competition in the 5,000-meter run, Ladia Albertson-Junkans and Lauren Williams. Albertson-Junkans was clocked in 16.41.84 to finish 14th, while Williams was 18th in a time of 16:47.92.

The Gophers captured two top-5 finishes in both the high jump and the long jump. Liz Roehrig, coming off her heptathlon title at the Cal Multi-Event Meet earlier in the week, added a second-place finish in the high jump by clearing 5-8 3/4. Caitlin Roemhildt was third with a height of 5-7 3/4. Christin Kingsley posted a third-place showing in the long jump with a mark of 19-5 1/4, edging teammate Sarah Nelson, who finished fifth with a jump of 19-2.

Kadian Douglas led the Gopher sprint corps, placing fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.09 seconds. She ran a quicker time of 11.92 in the prelims. Douglas also placed 10th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.55.

Minnesota’s next competition is April 7-8, when the Gophers travel to Athens, Ga., to compete in the Georgia Invitational.
