The University of Minnesota men’s basketball program announced today Lawrence Westbrook has signed a scholarship tender to play basketball at the University beginning next season.
Westbrook, a 6-0, 190-pound combo guard from Chandler, Ariz., played his senior year of high school at Winchendon Prep in Massachusetts. He led Winchendon in scoring at 18 points per game. Rivals.com ranked Westbrook the 75th-best player in the nation as well as the 12th-best shooting guard. As a junior, he led the nation in scoring at 40.1 points per game average. He broke the Arizona single-season scoring record, finishing the year with 883 points in 22 games. Last summer, he was an All-Star at the adidas camp and attended the NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp. An excellent student, Westbrook carries a 3.7 grade point average and is ranked eighth in his class at Winchendon. Westbrook originally signed a letter of intent with Iowa State, but was released from his NLI when the school terminated head coach Wayne Morgan and his staff.
“Lawrence is a player who can continue to build the future of this program,” head coach Dan Monson said. “Not only is he a dynamic scorer, but an excellent student who will represent this University in a first-class way. His game has continued to develop over the past year and he will add depth to our backcourt immediately.”
