Gopher Athletics Rank Seventh in Latest Directors? Cup Standings

Minnesota earned points in eight NCAA championships during the winter season, highlighted by second-place finishes by the wrestling and women’s hockey team. Wrestling earned the highest point total with 90 following its runner-up national finish. Men’s swimming gained 66 points for an 11th-place NCAA finish, while women’s track and field earned 64.5 points for a 12th place indoor finish and women’s swimming and diving recorded 53 points for finishing 21st at the national meet. Women’s hockey was awarded 45 points for its second-place national finish. Other sports contributing points during the winter season included men’s indoor track & field (46.5 points), women’s basketball (25 points), men’s gymnastics (16.25 points) and men’s hockey (12.5 points). The standings do not take into account points for women’s gymnastics.
The Gophers improved 20 spots during the winter season after finishing 27th in the final fall Directors’ Cup standings. The Gophers finished 22nd in the 2004-05 Director’s Cup standings.
Stanford currently leads the cup standings with 737 points, followed by Texas (647.5), Wisconsin (616), Penn State (586.25), Ohio State (575.25) and Notre Dame (570). The Gophers currently have 565.75 points heading into the spring season. Rounding out the top 10 are Southern California in eighth with 558.75 points, North Carolina in ninth with 554 points and Tennessee with 547 points.
