Minnesota Hosts Illinois and Purdue to Close Out Regular Season

The University of Minnesota women's tennis teams closes out the 2006 regular season this weekend with matches against Illinois and Purdue at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Golden Gophers (4-16, 1-7 Big Ten) host Illinois at 11 a.m., on Saturday, April 22, and the Boilermakers at noon on Sunday, April 23.

The dual against Purdue on Sunday will be the last home match for the Golden Gophers' three seniors - Nischela Reddy, Shelby Rohrer and Megan Steiger.

Minnesota's top player, Reddy currently ranks seventh on the school's career singles wins list with 71 and fifth in career doubles wins with 77. Her 148 combined singles and doubles victories rank fifth all-time. This season, the native of Hyderabad, India is 17-13 overall, 12-8 in dual matches and 6-2 in the Big Ten. Reddy is 2-3 vs. ranked opponents this spring and is the lone Golden Gopher with a winning record in dual matches and conference play. Last season, she was named to the All-Big Ten Team and Academic All- Big Ten Team. The team's most valuable and most improved player in 2004-05, Reddy posted a 16-15 overall singles record, an 11-9 dual mark and a 5-5 record in Big Ten action.

Shelby Rohrer and Megan Steiger joined the Golden Gophers as walk-ons in January of 2004. Rohrer is a native of Minnetrista, Minn., while Steiger hails from Brainerd, Minn. Both Rohrer and Steiger were named 2005-06 U of M Scholar-Athletes.
