The training room was named the Dr. J Patrick and Linda M. Smith Football Athletic Medicine Center to recognize the generous support of Pat and Linda Smith toward the project, in addition to the more than 20 years of superior medical services by Pat Smith as the football team physician.
Originally constructed in the mid-1980s, both the athletic medicine center and equipment room received major improvements. An additional 1,000 square feet was added to the athletic medicine center to house new cardiovascular equipment, state-of-the-art rehabilitation equipment, new ice machines, improved office space and a hot and cold plunge pool. The majority of the additional space went to the construction of a new treatment and rehabilitation area that includes eight additional treatment tables.
The Gopher football booster club raised funds for the renovation of the newly named Goal Line Club Equipment Room. The Goal Line Club Equipment Room was updated to include a state-of-the-art storage system, new higher capacity lockers, improved ventilation system and re-designed work space to increase work efficiency. Offices for the head and assistant equipment managers were also added to the facility for the first time.
The athletic medicine facility and equipment room construction was completed just prior to the start of spring football practice in late March. The Gophers will conclude the spring season tomorrow with their annual spring game at the Metrodome. The spring game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., with doors opening at 9:30 a.m.
