Golden Gophers Head to Illinois for 2006 Big Ten Championship

The Golden Gophers (5-17, 2-8 Big Ten) are the No. 9 seed for this weekend’s 2006 Big Ten Women's Tennis Championship in Champaign, Ill. Minnesota will face No. 8 seed Penn State (8-12, 2-8) on Thursday, April 27 at 10 a.m., in the first round. Minnesota lost to Penn State, 5-2, on April 16 in State College, Pa. With a win over the Nittany Lions, the Maroon and Gold would advance to the quarterfinals to face Big Ten regular season champion Northwestern (17-4, 10-0) on Friday, April 28 at 10 a.m. The top five seeds in the Big Ten Championships receive byes to the quarterfinal round. At Big Tens
The Golden Gophers hold a 19-42 (.311) all-time record at the Big Ten Championships. Minnesota has only posted a winning record at the conference tournament twice in 2000 and 2003. In seven of the last nine seasons, the Maroon and Gold has gone one-and-out at the Big Ten Championships. Minnesota has never captured the Big Ten Conference title. Head Coach Tyler Thomson is 2-4 at the conference championships. Minnesota’s highest finish at the Big Ten Championships was its second-place showing in 2003. The team finished third in 1996, '99 and 2000.
