Karl Erickson Wins Shot Put Title at Drake Relays

Senior Karl Erickson captured the title in the shot put at the historic Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday. Erickson matched his season-best performance with the winning toss of 61 feet, 9 3/4 inches. Erickson is Minnesota’s 45th Drake Relays champion.

Minnesota’s 4x800-meter relay placed second, pacing the Golden Gophers on the track. Walter Langkau, Ben Hanson, Hans Storvick and Trent Riter teamed to clock a time of 7 minutes, 24.18 seconds, the fifth-fastest time in school history.

The Gophers’ 4x400-meter relay advanced to Saturday’s final with a season-best and NCAA regional qualifying time of 3:09.36. Adewole Adebayo led off the relay, followed by Jason Erickson, Langkau and Aaron Buzard.

Minnesota’s third relay competing on Friday was the 4x200-meter relay. The squad of Andy Newman, Adebayo, Sayfe Jassim and Erickson finished sixth in a time of 1:26.47.

The Gophers had one athlete, Derek Gearman, compete in an individual event on Friday. Gearman placed 10th in the long jump, but landed a personal best and NCAA regional qualifier with a leap of 24-2 1/4.

Saturday, the final day of the Drake Relays, will be a busy one for the Gophers. Highlights of the schedule for the Gophers are Aaron Buzard, competing in the 400-meter special invitational, and John Albert and Kevin Netzer, competing in the high jump special invitational.
