Minnesota Volleyball Starts Off Spring Season with Strong Showing

The Minnesota volleyball team started off its spring season with a strong showing at the Palos Courts Tournament in Chicago, Ill. on Saturday, Apr. 1 Minnesota won 11 of the 12 games that it played through the course of six matches (that lasted two games apiece).

Minnesota’s mark of going 11-1 in 12 games (through the course of six matches) was the best mark in the tournament. Purdue finished second at 10-2.

Minnesota started off the tournament winning two games Bradley 26-24 and 25-10. The Golden Gophers split a pair of games with Illinois-Chicago 22-25 and 25-17. Minnesota then claimed a pair of games from New Mexico 25-23 and 25-20.

In the afternoon session, the Golden Gophers won all six games its played. Minnesota won 25-20 and 25-21 over Iowa State. The Golden Gophers then defeated Northern Illinois 25 -16 and 25-22. The Golden Gophers finished the tournament by defeating Illinois State 26-24 and 25-11.

Minnesota will play its next tournament in Gainesville, Fla. on Saturday, Apr. 8. The Golden Gophers will play a pair of matches in which the first two games will be up to 30 and the third game will be up to 15. The first match will be against Virginia at 10 a.m. and in the second match Minnesota will take on host Florida at 12:30 p.m.

During the afternoon, the teams will play each other again. The format will include two games up to 30 and an optional third game up to 15. Minnesota will play Virginia at 2:00 p.m. and finish the tournament against Florida at 4:30 p.m.

Minnesota will also play at the Great Lakes Tournament in Chicago, Ill. on Apr. 22 and will host a spring tournament on Apr. 29 at the Sports Pavilion.
