Minnesota Falls to Ohio State 10-2 in Series Opener

Junior Dan DeLucia pitched eight innings, gave up six hits, one run and struck out three batters in a winning effort for Ohio State. With the win, DeLucia moved to 9-2 on the season.
Minnesota was led offensively by Dan Lyons (Rochester, Minn.) who was three-for-four with a home run, two runs and an RBI. Senior Tony Leseman (St. Paul, Minn.) also reached base twice going one-for-three with a walk.
Jon Hummel (Lakefield, Minn.) also had his first career hit in Big Ten play going one-for-two on the night. His first hit came in a pinch-hit appearance in the top of the seventh.
Minnesota starter Cole DeVries (Eden Prairie, Minn.) took his second loss in Big Ten play and dropped to 5-3 on the season. DeVries gave up 12 hits and five earned runs in four and two thirds innings of work. Josh Oslin (Mora, Minn.) pitched two shutout inning for Minnesota, giving up just one hit and striking out three batters.
Ohio State got on the board first with a single run in the bottom of the first inning. Matt Angle drew a one-out walk to get things started for the Buckeyes. Eric Fryer moved to Angle to second when grounded the first pitch through the left side for a single. Angle came around to score on an RBI single by Ronnie Bourquin to give Ohio State at 1-0 lead. Minnesota got out of the inning when DeVries got Jedidiah Stephen to ground into a double play.
Minnesota tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second when junior Dan Lyons (Rochester, Minn.) delivered a two-out solo home run over centerfield. The home run was Lyons second of the season and first in Big Ten play.
Ohio State mounted a threat in the bottom of the second inning when J.B. Shuck led off with a double. Shuck moved up to third on a fly out by Jason Zoeller. However, DeVries got Wes Schirtzinger to ground out with the infield in and one out to keep Shuck at third. DeVries then got Justin Miller to fly out to get out of the inning without any damage.
The Buckeyes scored two runs to move ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Jacob Howell led the inning off with a line shot to left field. MacLean got a good jump and had a chance to make sliding catch, but slipped on the wet outfield grass and the ball got by for a leadoff double. Howell moved up to third on a groundout by Matt Angle. Fryer drew a walk to make it first and third with one out.
Bourquin gave Ohio State the lead back at 2-1 with an RBI single to left centerfield. DeVries got Stephen to fly out to right field and Mee made a throw that held Fryer at third. Shuck delivered an RBI single to give the Buckeyes a 3-1 lead over Minnesota.
The Buckeyes expanded the lead to 7-1 with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Wes Schirtzinger and Justin Miller started the inning off with back-to- back singles to make it first and second with no one out. Howell laid down a bunt to attempt to move the runners over, but it was thrown away allowing Schirtzinger to score to make it 4-1. Angle followed with a double to left field to give the Buckeyes a 5-1 lead. Minnesota caught a break when DeVries threw out Angle when it he was to far of second base.
Bourquin followed with an RBI double to extend the Buckeye lead to 6- 2. Shuck added an RBI single to give Ohio State a 7-1 lead.
Ohio State pushed another three runs across the plate to move its lead out to 10-1. With one out, Shuck singled and came around to score on a Jason Zoeller RBI triple to make it 8-1. Zoeller came around to score on an RBI single by Miller to give the Buckeyes a 9-1 lead. Miller moved up on a wild pitch and scored the Buckeyes last run of the night on a Howell RBI single to make it 10-1.
Minnesota added a single run in the top of the ninth when Lyons led off with a double, moved up to third on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-2.
Shuck led the way for Ohio State going four-for-five with one run and two RBI, while Bourquin was three-for-five with three RBI and a double. Eight of Ohio State’s nine batters in the starting lineup had hits on the night, as the Buckeyes pounded out 18 hits on the night.
Minnesota will face Ohio State on Saturday, May 13 in a doubleheader at 12:35 p.m. (CT) and in the series finale on Sunday, May 14 at 12:00 p.m. (CT).
