Minnesota Defeats Augsburg 12-5 in Midweek Game

Eleven different Golden Gophers had hits on the night, as 18 different position players took the field for Minnesota. Nine different players also scored runs for Minnesota on the night.
Taylor VanderAarde (Hastings, Minn.) led the way going one-for-two with a home run, two runs and three RBI on the night. Jeremy Chlan (Apple Valley, Minn.) was one-for-two with his first career home run and two RBI.
Kevin Carlson (Edina, Minn.) was also two-for-three with a run and two RBI. Joe Maciej (Elk River, Minn.) also had a multi-RBI game going one-for-two with two RBI.
Mike Mee (Richfield, Minn.) also scored two runs and was one-for- three, while Kyle Baran (Apple Valley, Minn.) reached base three times, and was one-for-one with two runs.
Reid Mahon (St. Paul, Minn.) picked up the win in relief to move to 2- 0 on the season. Mahon gave up two hits and struck out two batters in three innings of work. Tom Buske (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Marcus McKenzie (Minnetonka, Minn.) also pitched one shutout inning of relief each.
The loss went to Augsburg starter Pat Gornick, who gave up eight hits and nine runs in three innings of work.
Augsburg got on the board first with a single run in the top of the first. The Auggies got an RBI single from Troy Deden to take a 1-0 lead.
Minnesota followed with a five-run bottom of the first inning to take a 5-1 lead. Nohelty led off the inning with single and moved to second when MacLean was hit by a pitch. MacLean was wiped out when Mike Mee (Richfield, Minn.) reached on a fielder’s choice, and Nohelty advanced to third. Nohelty came home to score on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1, while Mee moved up to second.
Baran singled to make it first and third, and Leseman followed with an RBI single to plate Mee to put the Golden Gophers ahead 2-1. VanderAarde followed with a three-run homer to right centerfield to give the Golden Gophers a 5-1 lead.
Augsburg scored a single run in the top of the second to cut the Golden Gopher lead to 5-2. Mark Bauer led the inning off with a double, and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Dusty Hinz to cut the Minnesota lead to three runs.
The Golden Gophers pushed their lead out to 9-2 with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Mee led off the inning with a single, and moved to second on a Baran walk. With one out, VanderAarde drew a walk to load the bases. Kevin Carlson (Edina, Minn.) delivered a two- run single to plate Mee and Baran to give Minnesota a 7-2 lead. Two batters later, Joe Maciej (Elk River, Minn.) delivered a two-run double to right centerfield to push the Golden Gopher lead out to 9- 2.
Minnesota added a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning to move ahead 10-2. Bryan Jost (Oakdale, Minn.) got things started with a one-out double to right centerfield. Jost moved to third on a groundout, and came home to score on an RBI infield single by Aaron Larson (Lakeville, Minn.) to give the Golden Gophers the 10-2 lead.
The Golden Gophers pushed two more runs across the board in the bottom of the eighth inning. Nate Hanson (Chanhassen, Minn.) led off the inning by getting a hit by a pitch. Jeremy Chlan (Apple Valley, Minn.) greeted reliever Brian Olson with a two-run homer to left field on his first pitch to give Minnesota a 12-2 lead. The home run was Chlan’s first of his career.
Augsburg pushed across three runs in the top of the ninth inning to move the score the eventual final tally of 12-5.
The Auggies were led by Jeff Stomberg, who went one-for-three with two RBI.
Minnesota will finish Big Ten play with a series against Indiana at the Metrodome on May 19-21. The Golden Gophers will face the Hoosiers on Friday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m., in a doubleheader on Saturday, May 20 at 2 p.m. and in the series finale on Sunday, May 21 at 1 p.m. On Saturday, Minnesota will honor the 1956 National Championship team in between doubleheader games. The first game on Saturday will also be televised by Fox Sports Net North. All four games will be broadcast on WMGT (1220 AM) and webcast on gophersports.com.
