Smith is a 6-1 power forward from Whitby, Ontario, and a graduate of Leo Austin Secondary School. She joins a 2006 Gopher recruiting class with Korinne Campbell, Brittany McCoy and Breanna Salley that was already graded as the No. 11 class in the nation by the Blue Star Report and No. 17 by the All-Star Girls Report.
“We’re exciting about the addition of a student-athlete like Tanisha, a player with solid work ethic, a drive to succeed and a desire to be a part of our Golden Gopher women’s basketball family,” said Borton. “We are fortunate to sign a player as talented as Tanisha at this time of the year. She’s an athletic force on the court that runs the court well and hits the boards with authority. She’s a great fit for the up-tempo style of basketball we will play next season.”
Barnes, a Minnetonka, Minn., native, is a 5-10 wing who played high school basketball with current Gopher Leslie Knight at Hopkins High School. After accepting a scholarship to Winthrop and averaging 10 points per game her freshman season, Barnes left the program after a semester. She has attended Minnesota the last two years. Barnes will join the Gophers with junior eligibility.
“Jordan played at one of the best high schools for girls basketball in the state of Minnesota and that experience will serve as a good foundation for her time with our program,” said Borton. “Her work ethic, and team-first attitude make her a valuable addition to our program.”
