University of Minnesota incoming freshman football player Lee Campbell was awarded a $10,000 scholarship recently as the recipient of the 17th Annual Winged Foot Scholar-Athlete Award. The award, created by the Collier Athletic Club in 1989, recognizes the top scholar-athlete among the eight high schools of Collier County, Fla. Campbell, a native of Naples, Fla, was the first athlete from his Gulf Coast High School to ever win the award.

Campbell, who will receive $2,500 each year for four years, was all-state in football and wrestling, setting a school record for tackles on the football field and finishing unbeaten with a state title at 215 pounds in wrestling. The Winged Foot Award is based on athletic achievements, academic standing and sense of community.

Campbell ended his senior year with 151 tackles, 29 tackles-for-loss, four quarterback sacks, eight forced fumbles, an interception and a fumble recovery. He was the first player to be named all-state in football from his high school and went on to become the first wrestler from Gulf Coast to win an individual state championship title in the sport. Campbell, a member of the National Honor Society and a Presidential Academic Award winner, plans to major in business at Minnesota. He is projected to play linebacker for the Gophers.

The award was presented during the annual Winged Foot Awards Banquet at the Naples Grande Resort & Club. Baseball Hall of Fame second baseman Joe Morgan delivered the keynote address.
