Gophers Ranked Ninth in Soccer Buzz Preseason Regional Poll

The University of Minnesota soccer team is ranked ninth in the Great Lakes Region Preseason Poll according to Soccer Buzz Magazine.

Dating back to Oct. 3, 2005, it is the eighth straight week the Golden Gophers have been ranked in the regional poll, their longest streak since being ranked 39 straight weeks from 1997-2000. The Gophers were ranked in the regional poll seven of 13 weeks last season and received votes three times.

The Golden Gophers were ranked as high as sixth last season, their highest since receiving the same ranking on Sept. 4, 2000. Minnesota came in at No. 8 in the final regional poll, its highest final ranking since finishing sixth in 1999. Soccer Buzz began publishing regional rankings in 1997.

The Golden Gophers are one of nine Big Ten teams ranked in the top 15 in the Great Lakes Region. Illinois is ranked No. 2 to start the season, while Purdue, Michigan State, Ohio State and Michigan are ranked fourth through seventh respectively. Following Minnesota are Wisconsin at No. 10, Indiana at No. 12, and Northwestern at No. 14. In addition, Penn State is ranked second in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
