Golden Gopher Soccer Players Earn Awards

University of Minnesota soccer players Lindsey Schwartz (Bettendorf, Iowa) and Sara Clancy (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) were recently recognized for outstanding performances on the soccer field. The Minnesota Lightning named Schwartz the U19 Player of the Year, while Clancy was named the Female Athlete of the Year by the Cedar Rapids Gazette.
Schwartz, a sophomore forward for the Golden Gophers, was the Lightning’s fifth leading scorer with two goals and one assist for five points. She played in 11 games and logged a total of 579 minutes during the 2006 season.
Last season, Schwartz led the Gophers with six goals and 17 total points, becoming only the third freshman in school history to lead the team in scoring. She was also one of only three players on the team to start all 19 matches. For her efforts, Schwartz was named the team’s most valuable offensive player.
Clancy is a member of the 2006 Minnesota recruiting class that was ranked 13th in the nation by Soccer Buzz. She is one of five national top-100 recruits joining the Gophers this fall.
A 2006 graduate of Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Clancy was the state’s two-time Gatorade Player of the Year and an all-state first-team selection in both her junior and senior seasons. She played with the Region II ODP Team from 2000-04. During her high school career, Clancy won four state titles in three sports, including two in soccer. As a senior, she led the Saints to a perfect 21-0 record.
