The Gopher football team learned a little bit more about themselves Saturday at their annual Fan Fest at the Gibson Nagurski Football Complex. The team opened its doors to fans at 12:30 for interactive games, prizes and various Gopher paraphernalia before going through warm-ups at 1 p.m. The team got down to business at 1:45 with the start of the scrimmage.
The defense made its case early on as they held the offense in check on the first series of one's vs. one's. Special teams highlighted the third series as linebacker Pat Cheney blocked a punt and returned it 25 yards for a score. Other defensive highlights included four interceptions by the defense, including two in the red zone.
On offense, the story of the day revolved around true freshman E.J. Jones, who was given a chance to show his skills to the Gopher faithful. With starting running back Amir Pinnix limited to only three carries on the afternoon, Jones made the most of his time in the spotlight as he had several impressive runs, including the scrimmage's most breathtaking play, a 39-yard touchdown scamper reminiscent of Barry Sanders. Sophomore Alex Daniels also made his debut in front of a live audience as he showcased his straightforward style powering for a goaline touchdown run of his own. Freshman wideout Mike Chambers also hauled in a touchdown in the red zone for the offense.
Following the scrimmage the team signed autographs and took pictures with fans in the indoor practice facility.
The Gophers will have Sunday off before returning to the field for two practices on Monday, Aug. 21.
