University of Minnesota women's hockey sophomore defenseman Melanie Gagnon (St. Adolphe, Man.) is one of 57 players selected to participate at the Canadian National Team Fall Festival, Sept. 2-10 in Kenora, Ont. It is her first time to participate at the fall festival.
The players attending Canada’s National Women’s Team Fall Festival will be divided into three teams by the coaching staff and will play a series of intersquad games in Kenora. Gagnon and the others will all be vying for positions with Canada’s National Women’s Team for events during the 2006-07 season, including the 2006 Four Nations Cup, in Kitchener, ON from November 5-12, 2006 and the 2007 IIHF World Women’s Championship, which will take place in Winnipeg and Selkirk, Man. from April 3-10, 2007.
Gagnon was recently named to her fourth-consecutive Canadian Under-22 Team. In the last series against the U.S. Team in August, Gagnon tallied an assist in the 6-0 win over Team USA. In her first year as a Golden Golden, Gagnon scored two goals and nine assists for 11 points. The blueliner played in 39 games with the Gophers, missing two games to compete with the Under-22 Team in January of 2006. At the end of the regular season, Gagnon was named to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's All-Rookie Team along with teammates Kim Hanlon and Gigi Marvin. Gagnon's biggest goal of the season came in the NCAA Regional game when she scored the gamewinner against Princeton to advance Minnesota to the NCAA Frozen Four.
