The University of Minnesota women’s tennis team opens its 2006-07 season this weekend as host of the 2006 Gopher Invitational at the Baseline Tennis Center. The event runs Sept. 15-17, and features Minnesota, Air Force, Boston University, Iowa, Gonzaga, Missouri, Nebraska, Wichita State and Wisconsin-Green Bay competing in four singles brackets and two doubles draws. Play begins at 9 a.m., each day of the tournament. Check gophersports.com for results from the Gopher Invitational.
The Golden Gophers, led by sixth-year head coach Tyler Thomson, return seven players from the 2005-06 squad and add seven newcomers to the lineup this season. The Maroon and Gold welcome a experienced and talented lineup in 2006-07 with the return of senior Ida Malmberg, juniors Lindsay Risebrough, Jane Anderson and Danielle Mousseau, and sophomores Karina Chiarelli and Mariana Spilca. With the addition of talented freshmen Jackie Claypool, Tijana Koprivica, Mikayla Rogers, Jackie Sperling and Liz Tusler, and transfers Alex Seaton (from Colgate) and Ashley Schellhas (from Vanderbilt), Minnesota expects a return to the upper echelon of the Big Ten Conference.
Last season, Minnesota witnessed a promising start, a trying middle portion of the season, a solid close to the year and some strong individual performances. Minnesota was led all season by captain Nischela Reddy and persevered when injuries struck down Jane Anderson and Lindsay Risebrough. Ida Malmberg continued her improvement as a Golden Gopher, while Marina Bugaenco, Danielle Mousseau, Mariana Spilca, Shelby Rohrer, Megan Steiger and Jenna Tellefsen helped the Maroon and Gold to a 5-18 overall record and a 2-8 mark in the Big Ten.
After opening the season with three losses to strong non-conference opponents, Minnesota won three of its next four matches. From there, the Golden Gophers suffered an extended losing streak to finish the non-conference season and begin the Big Ten schedule. UM snapped out of the slump with its first conference win of the season, a 4-3 victory over Wisconsin on April 9. The triumph over Bucky was Minnesota’s first since the 2002-03 season. The Golden Gophers then gained the second legue win on April 22 with a 5-2 victory over Illinois. UM’s two conference wins were its most since winning the 2003 Big Ten Regular Season Championship with a 9-1 record. The Maroon and Gold wrapped up the 2005-06 season with a narrow 4-3 loss to Penn State at the Big Ten Championship in Champaign, Ill.
