GOPHER PLAYER COMMENTS FROM PRESS CONF. VS. TEMPLE (9/12/06)
OC Tony Brinkhaus
On mistakes on Saturday:
“All we can do is look at our mistakes and focus on our next opponent which is Temple. We need to pick up where we left off and learn from our mistakes and hope to improve. That is all we can do at this point.”
On respecting the opponent:
“It is a nonconference game and we hope to improve early in the season, especially with the Big Ten right around the corner. We cannot look ahead to any other teams; we have to go into every game hoping to improve the little things. Hopefully everything will fall in place and we will be ok.”
Lessons from Cal:
“It is a combination of things [reasons MN lost]. We hurt ourselves on penalties, and at the same time we didn’t execute that well. We need to take from that game what we can and each guy needs to accept responsibility for what he can do. In doing that we need to go into Temple and play much better than we did last week.
“You learn more about your team in a loss because you see more struggles than you do in a 44-0 win [Kent State]. You can almost get a false sense of comfort in your abilities. In a game like Cal, it gives us a chance to go back to the drawing board and realize that you cannot make those mistakes when you get into the Big Ten. It is a good thing that we are getting tested now.”
Playing at home:
“We are excited to get back into the dome and get those rowdy students in there. We want to get that feeling of college football back because it feels like a long time since we have stepped into the dome and we are looking forward to it.”
WR Logan Payne
“Every game is a chance to come out and get better and that is how we are going to view it. We are going to come out and not look past Temple. From the film study Coach said he was going to coach this game like every other game, we are going to come out and get the offense rolling.”
On cleaning up:
“We are going to look at this game as a chance to clean some things up on running and passing and hopefully start running on all cylinders by Big Ten season.”
On the Cal game:
“We had a let down at Cal and I think we are hungry and excited to get back out on the field again and show what we can do.”
On mistakes in Cal:
“We had a few new guys on the starting team and had a holding call here and there and we just need to focus on fundamentals and come out strong this weekend.
LB John Shevlin
On MN Defense against Cal:
“We had them in the backfield, but when you miss tackles in the backfield and with their speed it really killed us. When you are on the road it really hurts you because you have the crowd against you. You just want to get your offense on the field because you know what they are capable of doing, you just want to give them at least a chance to do something. It was a defeating feeling but that is part of the game and you have to deal with it. The momentum can work in different ways, when you’re up, you’re up and when you’re down, you’re down.
LB Mike Sherels
On MN Defense against Cal:
“Not to take anything away from Marshawn Lynch, he is a heck of a back and athlete, but on our side of the ball our tackling was left exposed and we know that need to come in and put in a lot of work. We cannot have breakdowns, it is not our schemes that are the problem it is our technical football, it is the fundamentals that the coaches are trying to stress.”
On Temple:
“It is a game that we have to come back and try to right a lot of the wrongs that we had in the Cal game. We obviously have a lot of holes and question marks and things that we need to improve on. We just need to take this week of practice and have a strong week and come and improve against Temple.”
Quarterback Bryan Cupito
On Cal game:
“I had lot of bad throws, I played poorly, a couple bad decisions, a couple line-up problems. After that first drive everything went south quick. It was one of those days, I couldn’t get anything going, it was disappointing but we couldn’t regroup after that first drive.”
On playing at home on Saturday:
“It is exciting because our first two games were on the road so it is nice to be back home. Hopefully we will have a big crowd and show everyone that we really aren’t that bad. We just want to regroup this weekend and hopefully get a win.”
On playing against Temple who is 0-2
“If we play like we did last week it is going to be a real good game. They have to win sometime and who knows, this might be the game for them. We need to play better than we did last week and we need to really get on track before we get into the Big Ten.”
