Minnesota Sweeps Tulane in Diet Coke Classic
The Minnesota volleyball team (5-4) swept Tulane (4-4) by scores of 30-24, 30-24, 30-22 in its second match of the Diet Coke Classic on Saturday, Sept. 16. With the win, the Golden Gophers moved to 2-0 in the tournament, while Tulane dropped to 0-2.
In the earlier match, Dayton defeated UConn in four games to move to 2-0 in the tournament. In the first match of the night session, Tulane will play UConn. The Golden Gophers will face Dayton for the tournament championship at 7:30 p.m.
Minnesota was led by Kyla Roehrig (Papillion, Neb.) who hit .444 (14-2-27) and had 14 kills with four blocks. Sophomore Kelly Schimdt (Champaign, Ill.) made her first collegiate start and had a career-high 12 kills, while hitting .556 (12-2-18).
Senior Malama Peniata (Plymouth, Minn.) had a match-high 18 digs and three service aces, while setter Rachel Hartmann (St. Charles, Ill.) finished with 42 assists and 10 digs. Senior Meredith Nelson (St. Croix Falls, Wis.) finished with six kills and four blocks for the Golden Gophers. Meghan Cumpston (Red Bluff, Calif.) also finished with six kills, eight digs and three service aces.
Minnesota outhit Tulane .292 to .198, and had 56 kills to the Green Wave’s 39 for the match. Minnesota also had seven service aces , and did not give one up for the first time this year.
Minnesota started out the match strong on a pair of aces from Meghan Cumpston (Red Bluff, Calif.). Tulane scored the next two points to tie it at 2-2. The Golden Gophers scored the next three points on a kill by Roehrig and a pair of service aces by Peniata to go up 5-2. The Green Wave cut the lead down to 8-6, before Bowman delivered a kill to give Minnesota the 9-6 lead.
The teams exchanged the next two points to make it 10-7. Minnesota scored three of the next four points to take a five-point lead at 13-8. Tulane answered with three straight points to cut the lead to 13-11. The teams exchanged the next eight points to make it 17-15. Hartmann delivered a kill on an overpass to give the Golden Gophers an 18-15 lead.
On the next play Peniata saved a rally with a great dig, followed up by a Roehrig kill to give Minnesota a 19-15 lead. The Green Wave scored the next point to make it 19-16, before Kelly Schmidt (Champaign, Ill.) and Hartmann had back-to-back kills to push the Golden Gopher lead to 21-16 to force a Tulane timeout. Out of the timeout, the Green Wave had three straight points to cut the Golden Gopher lead to 21-19 to force a Minnesota timeout.
Jones delivered a kill out of timeout to make it 22-19, but Tulane scored three of the next four points to cut Minnesota’s lead to 23-22. Vatterrodt followed up with a kill to make it 24-22, but Tulane came right back to cut it to 24-23. Schimdt delivered a kill to push it back to a two-point lead at 25-23. Tulane cut it back to one at 25-24, however Minnesota scored the final five points to claim the game 30-24.
Minnesota’s 5-0 run to end the game started with back-to-back kills from Vatterrodt and Schimdt to make it 27-24. Roehrig delivered a kill to make it 28-24. Tulane followed with a double contact violation and an attack error to finish the Golden Gophers’ five-point run.
The Golden Gophers hit .279 in the first game to .167 for Tulane. Minnesota also had 20 kills to 10 for the Green Wave, and tallied four service aces to none for Tulane. Roehrig led Minnesota with five kills, while Schmidt, Jones and Vatterrodt each had four. Peniata had a team-high nine digs in the game, along with two service aces.
In game two, Tulane jumped out to a 15-12 lead. Minnesota tied it at 15 with three straight points when Nelson sandwiched a pair of kills around a Roehrig kill. The Green Wave scored consecutive points to move ahead 17-15. However, the Golden Gophers came back with consecutive points punctuated by a combined block by Schmidt and Hartmann to tie it at 17.
Tulane moved ahead 18-17, before Minnesota responded with a 7-0 run to take a 24-18 lead. With the score tied at 18, Roehrig combined on a block with Schmidt and had a pair of kills to give Minnesota a 21-18 lead. Schimdt followed with back-to-back kills, and Roehrig finished off the run with another kill of her own. Tulane scored three of the next four points to make it 25-21. Schmidt followed with a kill to make it 26-21. Tulane cut the lead down to 27-24 with three of the next four points.
Nelson pushed the Golden Gopher lead to 28-24 with a kill. Cumpston followed with a service ace to give Minnesota game point at 29-24. Nelson and Hartmann teamed up on a block to give the Golden Gophers the final three points of the game to claim it 30-24.

Out of the timeout, Tulane cut the Minnesota lead to 13-10. The Golden Gopher got back-to-back kills from Cumpston and a combined block by Nelson and Bowman to make it 16-10. The Golden Gophers pushed it to 17-10 on a double-contact violation by the Green Wave. Minnesota expanded its lead to 11 points at 27-16. The Golden Gophers pushed it to game point at 29-18. Freshman Rachelle Hagerty (Defiance, Ohio) finished the match with kill to give the Golden Gophers game three 30-22.
The Green Wave was led by Sara Radosevic who hit .378 (18-4-37) with 18 kills and seven digs. Jenn Miller also led Tulane with 13 digs for the match.
