Koprivica Advances to Quarterfinals of Cissie Leary Invite

University of Minnesota women's tennis player Tijana Koprivica (Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro) won two singles matches today to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2006 Cissie Leary Invitational at the University of Pennsylvania. Koprivica was the lone Golden Gopher to advance out of the second round. For the day, Minnesota posted a 7-6 singles record and a 3-4 doubles mark.
Koprivica, a freshman, stayed undefeated on the season with two straight-set wins in singles play. In the first round, she routed Felicia Curcuru of Penn, 6-0, 6-0 before downing Harvard's Laura Peterzan, 6-4, 6-4, to move into the quarterfinals. Koprivica will take on Lauren Sadaka of Penn on Saturday, On the season, Koprivica is now 6-0 and is yet to lose a set.
Five other Golden Gophers won their opening round matches, but fell in the round of 32. Transfer Alex Seaton defeated Nisha Suda of Cornell, 6-2, 6-4, but dropped a 6-2, 6-2 match to top seed Juliette Mavroleon of Arizona. Mariana Spilca moved her fall record to 3-3 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Harvard's Cat Stewart before a 6-3, 6-4 defeat at the hands of Michelle Spiess of UMass.
Danielle Mousseau also won her first round match with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Big Ten rival Katelyn BeVard of Penn State. In the second round, Princeton's Melissa Saiontz posted a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Mousseau. In her first singles action of the year, Lindsay Risebrough opend with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Penn's Charlie Tansill, but fell to Masha Pozar, 6-4, 6-2, in the round of 32. Finally, senior Ida Malmberg cruised with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Sydney Murray of Columbia before a 6-2, 7-5 loss to Ivana King of Princeton.
In doubles action, three duos won their opening matches, but lost in the round of 16. Mousseau and Spilca took an 8-6 win over Steward/Brook of Havard, but suffered their first loss of the season with an 8-4 defeat at the hands of Harvard's Peterzan/Mukundan. On the season, the Golden Gopher duo is now 5-1. In other doubles play, Koprivica/Malmberg and Karina Chiarelli/Mikayla Rogers posted easy first-round victories before falling in the second round.
All Golden Gophers who fell in the second round will move into the consolation bracket
