Minnesota Completes Day 2 at 2006 Cissie Leary Invitational

The University of Minnesota women's tennis team completed day two of the 2006 Cissie Leary Invitational in Philadelphia with strong play in both singles and doubles action. On the day, the Golden Gophers went 4-5 in singles matches and 4-1 in doubles play (based on partial results provided by the University of Pennsylvania). The Cissie Leary Invite wraps up on Sunday, Sept. 24.
In singles action, freshman Tijana Koprivica suffered her first loss as a Golden Gopher with a 6-0, 0-6, (10-5) loss to Penn's Lauren Sadaka in the round of 16. Koprivica was the lone Minnesota player still alive in the the championship bracket. She bounced back in the consolation draw with a quick victory over Blakely Ashley of Princeton.
In other consolation action, Mariana Spilca and Danielle Mousseau prevailed in three-set matches, while Ida Malmberg cruised to a 6-4, 7-5 win over Cornell's Tamara John. Posting losses in consolation play was Karina Chiarelli, Mikayla Rogers, Alex Seaton and Lindsay Risebrough.
In the consolation doubles bracket, the Golden Gophers enjoyed a successful day, led by Risebrough/Seaton notching two wins. The Golden Gopher duo downed Murray/Varnay of Columbia, 8-2, before edging Big Ten rivals Shular/BeVard of Penn State, 8-6. Picking up close wins were Mousseau/Spilca with a 9-8 (4) victory over Columbia's Suda/Shearer and Chiarelli/Rogers taking a 9-7 triumph over Robertson/Roth of Princeton.
