Gophers Win Nine Events at Northwest Open

Junior transfer Challis Larson captured the title in the 600-meter dash and ran a leg of the winning 4x400-meter relay to lead the Golden Gopher women’s track & field team in their season-opening Northwest Open at the University Fieldhouse on Saturday. Overall, Minnesota captured nine event titles.
Larson, who transferred to Minnesota from BYU, was clocked in a winning time of 1 minute, 36.50 seconds. She ran the second leg of the 4x400m relay, joining Katie Grundman, Gabriele Anderson and Jennifer Becker to post a time of 3:55.58.
Senior Sarah Nelson opened her season with a win in the long jump, landing a leap of 18 feet, 3 3/4 inches and a runner-up showing in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.05 seconds.
Three Gopher All-Americans won events: Kadian Douglas in the 200-meter dash (25.56), Emily Brown in the 3,00-meter run (9:35.09) and Liz Roehrig in the high jump (5-6 1/2).
Other Minnesota titlists were Dawn Solberg in the 60-meter hurdles (8.77), Anna Arciszewska in the triple jump (37-10) and Alicia Rue in the pole vault (12-5).
Minnesota had one athlete post an NCAA provisional qualifying mark, senior Liz Alabi in the shot put, who placed second with a toss of 50-7 1/4..
The Gophers play host to the Jack Johnson Classic on Jan. 19-20 in their next competition.
