Wisconsin’s first-half run made the difference as Minnesota suffered a 70-57 loss in Big Ten play at the Kohl Center in Madison on Sunday. The Golden Gophers, playing their first game without injured senior team captain Kelly Roysland, fall to 13-9 overall, 5-4 in Conference play.

Emily Fox led the Gophers with 20 points, 16 in the second half. She also contributed seven rebounds and six assists. Ashley Ellis-Milan added 14 points, including an 8-for-8 performance from the free throw line. Korinne Campbell topped the Gophers with nine rebounds. Katie Ohm started her first collegiate game and scored three points.

The Gophers started ice-cold from the field, hitting on just one of their first nine field goals attempts. An Ellis-Milan putback tied the score at 19-19 with 7:43 left before intermission.

The Badgers reeled off 17 straight points at the end of the half, nine by Jolene Anderson and eight by Janese Banks, to take a 36-19 halftime lead. The Gophers struggled to find any kind of rhythm on offense going scoreless in their final 13 possessions, 0-for-6 from the floor and seven turnovers.

Wisconsin (16-6, 5-4) grabbed its largest lead early in the second half, when an Anderson breakaway lay-up gave the Badgers a 22-point lead at 45-23 with 17:41 remaining. The Gophers answered with an 8-1 run culminated by a Fox jumper at the 12:34 mark. Unfortunately it would take over two minutes for the Gophers (Ellis-Milan) to tally their next field goal.

The Gophers would make one more run, closing to within 12 points (65-53) at the 2:12 mark. Minnesota forced a Wisconsin turnover and had one possession to cut the deficit further, but Leslie Knight’s jumper was blocked by Brittany Heins. The Badgers secured the win making 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch.

The Gophers return home on Thursday, Feb. 1, to face Purdue. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
