TECHNOLOGY IN RECRUITING

The NCAA places strict limitations on the use of “technology” in recruiting. Bylaw 13.02.14 categorizes voice mail as telephone contact and instant messaging, text messaging and e-mails as letters or general correspondence.  Remember that general correspondence may not be sent to a prospect until September 1 of their junior year in high school.

**It is now permissible to show a prospect a computer recruiting presentation during an in-home visit and on official or unofficial visits to campus.  This new legislation, which is effective immediately, was passed by the NCAA Board of Directors at the January 2007 NCAA Convention.**

Bylaw 13.4.1 covers what may be sent or shown to prospects.

Permissible

E-mail or text messages with a stilled color picture (or graphic) of a birthday cake in the body of the text.

  • This cannot be an attachment to an email.

Instant Message with non-moving emotes (Smiley Face, Heart, Mr. Yuck, etc.) in the body of text.

Showing a permissible highlight video in person to a prospect.  The video may not be given to or left with the prospect.

  • All highlight videos you are planning on showing to prospects should be pre-approved by the Compliance Office.

Impermissible

E-mailing a graphic of a birthday cake with flickering candles.

Instant message with moving emotes, such as a face winking, smiling or rolling its eyes.

As you try new things or if you have any questions, please contact the Compliance Office.
