Melanie Gagnon Named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association has announced that University of Minnesota sophomore defenseman Melanie Gagnon has been named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week for her performance against North Dakota last weekend. The award marks the first of her collegiate career and the team's sixth weekly conference honor this year.

Gagnon, hailing from St. Adolphe, Man., scored all five of her points on the power-play with a goal and four assists. She also fired off nine shots on the weekend, a team high. Along with her power-play points, Gagnon was a key member of the Gopher penalty-kill, stopping UND in all 13 chances. Gagnon leads the defensemen in scoring with three goals and 18 assists for 21 points, ranking third on the team.

Gagnon and the rest of the Gophers compete in a home-and-home series this weekend against St. Cloud State. Friday's game will be held at Ridder Arena at 7 p.m., while Saturday's contest is at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn., also at 7 p.m. Friday's game will be televised on Fox Sports Net North at 9:45 p.m.
