SPONSOR FAMILIES

The NCAA prohibits placing student-athletes with a sponsor or host family. The rationale is that the benefits provided by the host or sponsor family would be considered an extra benefit for the student-athlete since sponsor families are not available to all students, and there is no previous relationship between the student-athlete and the host/sponsor family.

Student-athletes may only receive support from their natural or legal family, or from an individual with whom there is a pre-existing relationship.

A pre-existing relationship exists if a relationship between a student-athlete and a non-related individual:

-         began for factors other than a student-athlete’s participation in athletics or notoriety as a result of athletics, and

-         began prior to the student-athlete entering the 9th grade, and

-         began prior to the student-athlete gaining notoriety in athletics, and

-         the pattern of benefits given was not based on athletic success
