Minnesota Team Notes

Minnesota’s defense held Michigan to just one first down on its opening drive and forced the Wolverines to punt from the Gophers’ 46... It marked just the third time this season that the Gophers have held on their opponent’s opening possession (Miami-Ohio and Northwestern were the others).
Minnesota took an early 3-0 lead on a 29-yard field goal by Joel Monroe... It marked the second straight week that the Gophers have drawn first blood but just the third time this season that Minnesota has scored first... The Miami-Ohio and North Dakota State games were the other two.
Minnesota’s 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter marked just the second time this season that the Gophers have led after the opening 15 minutes (Miami-Ohio was the other)... With Michigan scratching back for a 13-10 edge at the break the Gophers have now trailed at intermission in 7 of 9 games this season.
Dom Barber’s 46-yard fumble recover for a touchdown during the second quarter was the Gopher’s first defensive touchdown of the season and just the second non-offensive score of the year for Minnesota... The last time Minnesota returned a fumble for a touchdown was at Michigan State last season, when Steve Davis return a Spartan fumble 48 yards for a score.
Duane Bennett’s 106 yards rushing today marked the fourth time Minnesota has had a 100-yard rusher in a game this season... Bennett is the third different Gopher to do it, joining Amir Pinnix and Jay Thomas.
Minnesota was held without an offensive touchdown today... It is the first time this season and the first time since the Gophers were shutout last year at Ohio State, 44-0, that Minnesota has failed to score an offensive touchdown, snapping a string of 12 straight games with a least one offensive TD.

Minnesota Individual Notes
Dom Barber’s 46-yard fumble return for a touchdown on the opening play of the second quarter was his third fumble recovery of the season and the third straight game he has recovered a fumble... Barber now has four career fumble recoveries... It was also his second career touchdown... Barber’s first career TD came on a 45-yard interception return vs. Indiana last season.
Steve Davis’ forced fumble in the first quarter was the second of his career and marked the first the time the junior has forced a fumble since doing so at Ohio State in 2006... The fumble was recovered by freshman Kyle Theret and was his first career fumble recovery.

Sophomore Derrick Onwuachi’s sack of Ryan Mallett late in the second quarter was the first of his career.

Joel Monroe’s 29-yard first-quarter field goal was just the fourth of the season by the Gophers and Minnesota’s first since Monroe connected on a 34 yarder vs. Purdue... The kick improved Monroe to 3-for-5 on the season and 6-for-9 for his career.
Sophomore defensive end Ray Henderson made his first career start... Weak linebacker Kevin Mannion made his first start of the season, his first career start at linebacker and the fourth of his career...
