Gopher Junior Brandon Smith Leaves Team

The Minnesota men’s basketball program today announced that junior guard/forward Brandon Smith is leaving the program.

“Brandon has been working hard in practice and I believe he could have played an integral role for the Golden Gophers this season,” said Gophers head coach Tubby Smith.” “I know that Brandon will land on his feet and go on to help the next university he attends. We wish him the best of luck.”

Smith, a graduate of Minneapolis Henry High School, played in 26 games (13 starts) as a sophomore and averaged 4.0 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. He posted career-highs in points (15) and field goals (7-9), assists (5) and steals (4) against Clemson in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Nov. 29. He finished his Gopher career with averages of 3.7 points, 2.1 rebounds and 13.6 minutes per game in 35 games (18 starts).

The Gophers open the 2007-08 season with a pair of exhibition games, Thursday, Nov. 1 against Minnesota State University, Mankato (7 p.m.) and Tuesday, Nov. 6 against Southwest Minnesota State (6 p.m.), prior to taking on Army in the regular season opener on Saturday, Nov. 10 (2 p.m.). All three games will be played at Williams Arena.
