The University of Minnesota softball program has announced the hiring of Shelly Wymer, (formerly Shelly Nichols) as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2008 season. As an infielder for the Golden Gophers from 2000-03, Nichols started 236 consecutive games at shortstop and had a career fielding percentage of .925.

“We are so excited to have Shelly join our staff,” said Gophers’ co-head coach Lisa Bernstein. “She was a fierce competitor as a player and really has a deep knowledge of the game. She’s spent the past four seasons coaching kids at all levels and brings a great deal of energy to our program.”

Wymer’s primary responsibilities will include coaching the team’s infielders and assisting with outfield instruction.

A four-year starter for the Golden Gophers, Shelly Nichols anchored some of the best infields in recent Minnesota history. She was a member of the 2002 and 2003 NCAA Tournament squads that finished a combined 33 games over .500, committing just five errors in 164 chances as a senior in 2003. She hit a career-high .254 as a junior in 2002 for the Gophers, pounding out 11 doubles, seven home runs and 30 RBIs, finishing second on the team in all three categories. She hit .228 in 671 career at-bats with 18 home runs and 89 RBIs.

“I’m looking forward to using the experience I’ve gained both inside and outside the U’ to help the program,” Wymer said. “I think providing some one-on-one instruction for the infielders and outfielders is going to be very rewarding.”

Wymer is a native of Austin, Texas and attended Stephen F. Austin High School. She has served as a program director at the University of Minnesota’s Office of Measurement Services for four years and resides in Shakopee with her husband, Rick.
