Minnesota Individual Notes
Freshman quarterback Adam Weber set the single-season completion record on his second completion of the game when he connected with Justine Valentine on the first play of the second quarter for an eight-yard pass. He bypassed Bryan Cupito’s 2006 record of 214. On the day, Weber had 24 completions for 190 yards and now has 237 on the year.
With his 15 pass attempts in the first half, Weber also broke Marquel Fleetwood’s record of 385 in a single season, set in 1992. Weber finished the game with 24 completions for 41 attempts and now has 412 on the season.
Adam Weber also set Minnesota’s single-season total offense chart with 3,073 yards, breaking Billy Cockerham’s 1999 total of 2,922 yards. Weber became the leader on a 30-yard completion to tight end Jack Simmons early in the fourth quarter.
Mike Sherels recorded his second sack of the season and third of his career when he sacked Iowa quarterback Jake Christensen in the first quarter. Derrick Onwuachi also collected his second sack of the season in the third quarter. His first of the year came against Michigan (10/27). Minnesota’s third sack of the game came from Lee Campbell, who also earned his second of the year. Campbell’s first of the year came against Florida Atlantic on September 15.
Senior fullback Justin Valentine scored his first touchdown of the 2007 season with a one-yard run, finishing off a 64-yard, 14-play drive at 4:33 in the second quarter. It was Valentine’s 11th touchdown of his career.
Joel Monroe kicked his longest field goal of his career when he connected on a 54-yard attempt as time expired in the first half. Prior to his 54-yard completion, Monroe’s career-long came on a 39-yarder at the 2005 Music City Bowl on December 20, 2005. His longest of the season came against Illinois last weekend. It was the first attempt Monroe and make of 50 yards or longer for his career.
Monroe’s 54-yard field goal is tied for the fifth-longest in school history and the longest field goal made since 2003. Rhys Lloyd made a 54-yard field goal on September 20, 2003 against Louisiana-Lafayette. Minnesota’s longest field goal came in 1986 when Chip Lohmiller made a 62-yard field goal, also against Iowa.
Desi Steib collected his second interception in two games and his second on the season. The pick also marked the second of his career. His first came against Illinois last weekend and had an 11-yard return.
With his touchdown in the fourth quarter, Eric Decker has 60 catches on the season and needs just three more to break Tutu Atwell’s school single-season record of 62 set in 1996.
