Golden Gophers Rebound with 5-3 win over Bemidji State

Whitney Graft and Andrea Nichols each tallied three points in a 5-3 win over Bemidji State, today, at Ridder Arena. Graft scored two goals and one assist, while Nichols netted a goal and two assists, while four others tallied a point in the 20th win of the season. The Gophers are now 20-9-1 overall and 17-8-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

The Gophers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Graft scored her first of two goals at the 1:11 mark of the first period. Andrea Nichols added the lone assist on the play. The Beavers responded at 6:24 when Tara Hiscock scored her first of two goals. Graft put the game to 2-1 at 17:41 on a power-play attempt. Dagney Willey started the play passing it to Melanie Gagnon at the point. Gagnon wound up for the slapshot, which was deflected by Graft over the head of Beavers' goalie Emily Brookshaw's head and into the net. The Beavers, however, added a power-play goal of their own at 18:10 by Hiscock. She capitalized on rebound shot for her seventh goal of the season. It was the first power-play goal allowed in the last 31 attempts. The Gophers outshot the Beavers, 14-4 in the first period of play.

Like the first period, Minnesota tacked on two additional goals in the second period to put the game at 4-2. Nichols scored her 13th goal of the season on an unassisted play at 11:16 in the second period. Nichols picked the loose puck off a BSU turnover and drove through the slot. The Maroon and Gold then added an even-strength goal at 14:41 in the second. Jenelle Philipczyk brought the into the zone and passed it to Erica McKenzie. She found Marvin at the right faceoff circle and Marvin rifled in a shot over Brookshaw's right shoulder for her 17th goal of the season. The Gophers also outshot the Beavers in the second period, rattling off 15 shots to BSU's seven.

The Beavers bounced back with a short-handed goal at 18:12 in the third period when Kelly Hart scored on a breakaway for her seventh goal of the season. Minnesota, however, retaliated when Jenelle Philipczyk scored a power-play goal at 18:46 in the third period for the 5-3 final. Graft and Nichols assisted on the play. Graft and Nichols each had career-high in points.

With the Gophers' win today, Minnesota has now one 20 games in each of Laura Halldorson's 10 seasons.

The Gophers will battle in-state conference rival Minnesota-Duluth, Feb. 17-18 at the Mars Lakeview Arena. Both games are at 3 p.m.
