The No. 8 University of Minnesota were held scoreless against Bemidji State, 2-0, tonight at Ridder Arena. With the loss, the Gophers drop to 19-9-1 overall and 16-8-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. It was the second time in 33 appearances that the Gophers have lost to Bemidji State and the second time in a row on the Gophers' home ice.
The Beavers added an early goal when Jessica Pullar scored at 3:55 in the first period. Jenn Sadler passed the puck from the boards and passed it to Pullar, who fired the puck in the slot for her second goal of the season. The two teams each had nine shots in the first period of play.
BSU added its second goal at 2:26 in the second period with Sadler scoring her ninth goal of the season. Kate Robinson took the initial shot, which was stopped by Gopher goalie Kim Hanlon. However, Sadler was taken down by Andrea Nichols and fell on top of the puck and slide into the net, which caused the puck to slide across the line.
That would be all that BSU goaltender Emily Brookshaw would need for the win. She had nine saves in the first, nine in the second and 10 in the third for a three-period total of 28. It was Brookshaw's second shutout of the season and first against the Maroon and Gold.
Minnesota's penalty kill kept its scoreless streak going as the Beavers were 0-for-3 with the extra attacker. The Gophers only allowed two BSU power-play shots on goal. Minnesota has not allowed a power-play goal since Jan. 20.
The Gophers will look to return to the win column tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. Tomorrow is senior day for Andrea Nichols, Maggie Souba and Becky Wacker.
