Sophomore Jamie Cheever ran to runner-up honors in the mile, leading a pack of four Golden Gopher milers who ran top-10 times at the Iowa State Classic on Saturday. Cheever clocked a time of 4 minutes, 45.10 seconds, the third-fastest time in school history and an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Minnesota showed powerful depth in the event adding three more top-8 finishes. Sophomore Gabriele Anderson finished fifth with a time of 4:48.33, bettering her own fifth-place mark in school history. Sophomore Heather Dorniden placed seventh in 4:49.39, sixth on the Gophers’ top-10 list in the event. Freshman Elizabeth Yetzer posted a time of 5:51.02 to add her name to the top-10 list in eighth.

Gopher senior Emily Brown ran a shorter event than usual, the 800 meters, but the success displayed her range. Brown place sixth with a time of 2:09.85, good for the fifth-fastest time in Gopher history. Challis Larson added a ninth-place showing in 2:10.94, the seventh-best clocking in school history.

Two other Gophers recorded top-10 finishes in their events. Liz Podominick placed seventh in the shot put with an effort of 50 feet, 3 1/2 inches. Dawn Solberg, who set a school record with a time of 8.62 in the 60-meter hurdle prelims on Friday, posted an eighth-place finish with a time of 8.74. She neared her record in the semifinal with a time of 8.63.

Former Golden Gopher All-American Shani Marks, now a volunteer assistant coach, won the triple jump competition competing unattached with a leap of 42-9 3/4.

Minnesota plays host to its final indoor meet of the season, the Parents’ Day Open, next Saturday, Feb. 17.
