Gopher Women's Hockey Falls, 7-1 to Minnesota Duluth

The No. 8 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team fell, 7-1, today to No. 7 University of Minnesota Duluth, today, at the Mars Lakeview Arena in Duluth, Minn. The Gophers drop to 20-10-1 and 17-9-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The Bulldogs earned their 19th win of the season and sit at 19-8-4 overall and 18-6-3 in league action.
UMD jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Emmanuelle Blais scored both goals at 1:00 and 2:38 in the first period. On her first goal of the period, Blais placed the puck underneath Kim Hanlon’s glove for her ninth goal of the season. She followed with her second goal on a power-play opportunity at 2:38 in the first. Minnesota’s best chances came on the power-play when the Gophers put back-to-back shots on Bulldog goalie Kim Martin, as she stuck her leg out and prevented a rebound shot.
The Bulldogs added three additional goals in the second period for a 5-0 score after the second period. UMD scored at 8:37, 9:44 and 19:29 in the second. Noemie Marin scored her 20th goal of the season at 8:37. Michaela Lanzl scored her ninth goal of the season at 9:44 when she put a shot on goal at the doorstep and slowly crept through Hanlon’s pads. Saara Tuominen scored her eighth goal of the season with less than a minute left in the second. Tuominen put a shot on goal. Hanlon got of piece of the puck, but not enough as it slowly crossed the line.
Erica McKenzie put the game at 5-1 when she scored on a wrist shot at 6:52 in the third period. Gigi Marvin connected with McKenzie at center ice as she brought it into the zone and took advantage of a two-on-one opportunity. It was McKenzie’s 10th goal of the season and Marvin’s 19th assist of the year. However, the Bulldogs put the game back to a five-goal lead when Elin Holmlov scored at 10:25 and then again at 15:42 to put the game at a 7-1.
The last time the Gophers fell to the Bulldogs at Mars Lakeview was in a 7-1 defeat to UMD on Feb. 14, 2003. The Gophers came back to split the series the last time with a 4-2 win the following day. Minnesota will look for a split tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Mars Lakeview Arena.
