Minnesota Falls to Indiana in Big Ten Road Contest

Minnesota (9-19, 3-11) dropped a Big Ten road contest to Indiana (18-8, 8-5) 71-59 on Wednesday, Feb. 21 in Bloomington, Ind. at Assembly Hall.
The Golden Gophers were led by a pair of 20-point games from juniors Dan Coleman and Lawrence McKenzie. McKenzie was 4-for-9 from the field, but had the 20 points on the strength of a career-high nine made free throws (9-for-10 on the night). He also shot 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Coleman was 8-for-14 from the field, and finished 4-for-5 from the free-throw line.
Freshman Lawrence Westbrook and sophomore Brandon Smith chipped in with eight and seven points respectively.
Indiana shot 26-for-58 from the field for a 45 percent clip on the night, while Minnesota was 18-for-44 for 41 percent. The Golden Gophers had their second-best free-throw shooting night of the season going 18-for-22 (.822) from the charity stripe. Their best two nights of the year have come in the last two road games (best night was 10-for-12 at Michigan on Feb. 10). Indiana was 13-for-20 from free-throw line, and went 11-for-14 in the second half after starting 2-for-6.
One of the deciding factors was Indiana’s 14 points off 13 Minnesota turnovers, while the Golden Gophers had two points off seven Hoosier turnovers. Minnesota was also outrebounded 33 to 26 on the night.
Out of halftime, Indiana pushed its lead up to nine on a couple of occasions, and led 48-39 at the 14:57 mark after a three-pointer by AJ Ratliff.
Minnesota grabbed some momentum with a 6-0 run paced by a pair of jumpers by Coleman sandwiched around a pair of free throws by McKenzie to cut the Hoosier lead to three points at 48-45 with 13:18 remaining in the game.
A pair of free throws by Joey Shaw gave Indiana a 50-45 lead, but McKenzie drilled a three-pointer at the 11:45 mark to cut the scored to 50-48.
Minnesota had several opportunities to tie or take the lead before D.J. White converted a layup with 9:24 left in the game to give Indiana a four-point lead at 52-48. Spencer Tollackson answered quickly with a turnaround jumper at the 8:56 mark to cut the Hoosier lead back to two at 52-50.
With 8:17 remaining Roderick Wilmont went to the line made his first free-throw, but missed the second. However, Indiana retained possession and Shaw hit a three-pointer to give the Hoosiers a four-point offensive trip to make it 56-50 with 7:48 remaining in the game. Armon Bassett and White followed with a pair of jumpers to give Indiana eight straight points to build a 10-point lead at 60-50 at the 6:18 mark.
Minnesota cut it down to 62-54 after McKenzie hit a pair of free throws with 4:45 remaining, but White answered with a pair of his own, and Shaw hit a pair of free-throws at the 2:57 mark to close out a crucial 14-4 run by Indiana over a span of four minutes and 51 seconds.
The Golden Gophers got it down to 68-59 on an old-fashioned three-point play by Coleman with a minute remaining, but Indiana scored the final three points to reach the final tally.
White led the way for Indiana with 17 points, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Roderick Wilmont also had 16 points, and was 3-for-5 from the behind arc, while AJ Ratliff chipped in with 10 points.
Indiana had a hot shooting first half at 53 percent, going 17-for-32 from the field. Minnesota was 9-for-21 in the half for a shooting percentage of 43 percent. The Golden Gophers did go 11-for-15 from the charity strip, while Indiana was just 2-for-6.
The Hoosiers jumped out to an early 7-1 lead, but Minnesota cut it to 9-4 thanks to a bucket and a free throw from Westbrook. The Hoosiers answered with back-to-back field goals to push their lead out to 13-4.
McKenzie’s three-pointer cut it to 13-7 with 13:41 remaining in the first half. However, Indiana pushed the lead back out to nine at 16-7. Minnesota cut it back to five at 16-11, after a pair of free throws from Smith and a dunk by Coleman at the 10:59 mark.
Bassett continued the back-and-forth nature of the first half by hitting back-to-back jumpers to push the Hoosiers lead back out to nine at 20-11. McKenzie hit a pair of free throws to push it back to a seven-point Indiana lead, but Wilmont answered with a three-pointer to make it to 23-13 at the 9:21 mark.
Indiana maintained its 10-point lead at 27-17, and expanded it to 13 points at 30-17 after a Ratliff three-pointer at the 7:45 mark. Westbrook helped Minnesota answer with a layup and then a three-pointer to cut the lead down to eight at 30-22.
The Hoosiers pushed it out to 10 points at 32-22, but Smith answered with a three-pointer to cut it back to 32-25 with 5:36 remaining in the first half. Indiana followed with five of the next six points to push its lead back out to 37-26 at the 1:53 mark.
Minnesota answered quickly with a 6-0 run to cut the Hoosier lead down to five points at 37-32. The run started with a jumper by Coleman, and followed with a pair of free throws by McKenzie. Tollackson closed it out with a put back off an offensive rebound with 35 seconds left in the half.
Wilmont put a halt to Minnesota’s momentum with a three-pointer with two seconds left in the half to send Indiana to the intermission with a 40-32 lead.
Minnesota returns to Williams Arena for its final home game of the year on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 1:30 p.m. against Michigan. That game can be seen live on KSTC Channel 45.
