GAMBLING AND THE NCAA TOURNAMENT

March Madness is approaching, and with it come a few reminders about gambling. NCAA Bylaw 10.3 prohibits all athletic department staff members and student-athletes involvement in organized sports gambling activities. This includes soliciting or accepting a bet on college or professional athletics, providing information to individuals involved in organized gambling activities, or otherwise participating in any gambling activity that involves college or professional athletics.

Examples of impermissible gambling activity for all staff and student-athletes include the following:
  • Betting on college or professional games which include wagering with a friend for any tangible item (e.g. a meal or sweatshirt).
  • Participating in NCAA Tournament pools
  • Involvement in any sport gambling websites
  • Las Vegas Sportsbooks
  • Participating in a fantasy sports league
  • Participating in an NCAA Office Pool
The NCAA has indicated that the term “gambling” encompasses any situations where there is risk (a pay-in to play) and reward (a pay-out at the end). In situations where there is no pay-in, the activity may be permissible but we still advise against your participation in many cases.

You may fill out a bracket for your own interests, but submitting that bracket into a pool for any benefit is impermissible.

If you have any questions, please contact the Compliance Office.
