Dorniden Wins 800 Meters at Meyo Invitational

Sophomore Heather Dorniden won the 800-meter run and qualified for the NCAA Championships to highlight a strong performance from the Minnesota women's track and field team in the second day of Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind. Dorniden ran the 800 meters in a time of 2 minutes, 4.33 seconds for the second-fastest indoor race of her career. It is the fastest 800 meters time in the country so far this season.

Jamie Cheever had a strong outing in the 800 meters as well, placing sixth overall and provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships with a career-best time of 2:06.34.

Senior Emily Brown also provisionally qualified for the national meet in the 1 mile, with a second-place time of 4:46.18.

Highlighting the field events was the Gophers' performances in the shot put. Senior Liz Alabi placed third in the event with a throw of 50 feet, ½ inch. Alabi won the weight throw title on Friday. Liz Podomonick placed fourth in the shot put with a mark of 49-7 ¼, while Kari Schmidt placed eighth in 47-5.

Minnesota also had three top-10 finishers in the pole vault. Andrea Smith placed second with a height of 12-7 ½. Laura Massey was sixth, marking 12-1 1/2, and Alicia Rue finished tied for 10th in 11-7 ¾.

Senior Kadian Douglas qualified for the finals in the 60 meters, finishing in ninth with a time of 7.71.

Dawn Solberg ran a career-best time in the 60-meter hurdles, timing 8.72 and placing ninth.

Minnesota will be competing in the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa next weekend.
