Tim Brewster Holds Live Chat at Gophersports.com

Head football coach Tim Brewster held a live chat at Gophersports.com on Thursday. Here's a transcript of the hour-long session.

Ray Bulinski:Dawson, MN:Coach Brewster; Is it possible that Harold Howell's listed height and weight are overstated at 5'6" and 160lbs? I read a publication that he is closer to 5'4" and 145lbs.....what are your thoughts Coach Brewster? Thank you

Coach Brewster::I've known Coach Hall at Mandarin High School in Jacksonville a long time. Harold Howell is going to become a Gopher favorite. He is one of the most dynamic players I have ever seen.

Patrick Curren:Bloomington, MN:I noticed you did not appoint a Defensive Back coach. Also, you have 5 Offensive Coaches vs. only 3 Defensive coaches. Who will coach the Defensive Backs? Will you hire another defensive coach?

Coach Brewster::Patrick, we anticipate hiring another defensive coach very soon. That person will likely coach the defensive backs.

John:Eagan, MN:Aside from Minnesota, what states do you envision being "pipelines" to the "U" in the coming years?

Coach Brewster::I anticipate our recruiting efforts will start with where are coaches come from, which is Texas, Florida, California, Illinois, Ohio…those states stand out, as well as Colorado. But I will say this, wherever there are great student-athletes, we will go out and pursue them.

Shannon Mack:chanhassen:1. When will the new defensive assistant be added to the staff? 2.Date and location of the spring game? Thanks!!!

Coach Brewster::Shannon, as I said, we anticipate making that hire very soon. It will important to get that person in place before spring practice.

Coach Brewster::Right now the spring game is scheduled for April 7 with the location still to be determined. We hope to announce the details very soon and we will make sure to spread the word.

Derek:Apple Valley:How will scouting the state of minnesota change? Will there be heavier scouting?

Coach Brewster::We will have all nine full-time assistant coaches recruit the state of Minnesota, along with myself. So we will have 10 coaches responsible for this state. The people of Minnesota will become very familiar with us.

jake:stevens point, wis.:Are you going to change the uniforms???

Coach Brewster::We are currently reviewing subtle changes to the uniform.

Tim:Minneapolis:Coach, you now have an opportunity to coach your son...what does that mean to you?

Coach Brewster::It just means I’ve got a good quarterback coming in who happens to be my son. I’m very excited that we were able to attract a kid with Clint’s ability.

John Thorsen:Coon Rapids:Dear Coach Welcome to MN. I want to know what your thoughts are on our kicking game and special teams ? I look forward to supporting you and the players. Thanks John

Coach Brewster::Thank you John. It's great to be in Minnesota. We want our special teams to be the best in the country. We’re going to work extremely hard and spend a lot of time focusing on that area. It’s an extremely important part of the football game.

Dave:Woodbury:No matter which QB is starting, they will be inexperienced. With that said, does this mean we'll see a simplified version of the spread offense being used this year?

Coach Brewster::We’re certainly not going to make the player fit the system. We’re going to make the system fit our personnel. Whether that’s a simplified version or a complex version, we’re going to use the system that gives us the best chance to win a Big Ten Championship. Mike Dunbar, in my opinion, is the best offensive coordinator in the country.

Garry:Saint Paul:Coach Brewster, we've all heard about the plans for the spread offense....but how would you describe the defensive scheme you plan to run here?

Coach Brewster::We are going to be fast. Speed will be the key to our success on defense. We need to be in the attack mode. We’re not going to sit back and be vanilla defensively. We’re going to attack the offense and take control of the game.

Molly:Fridley:Is the weather overblown as a detriment when it comes to recruiting? How do you account for record-breaking cold like last weekend even though it would never be that cold during the season.

Coach Brewster::Good question Molly. In my opinion, the weather is overrated as a factor in recruiting. The weather was not a detriment in recruiting this past weekend or in the month we’ve been here. Student-athletes want to be a part of a successful program and a great academic institution. That is most important.

Jason:Springfield, MO:Now that you have your recruiting class well in hand, what are your plans between now and spring ball?

Coach Brewster::Thanks for the question Jason. We are going to spend that time implementing what we are going to be doing on offense, defense and in the kicking game. Even though we have our 2007 class signed, we are continuing our efforts to secure the 2008 class. We will be relentless in recruiting, I can promise you that!

John:Bemidji:Can you talk about your efforts to develop relationships with the high school coaches in this state...more specifically, the out-state coaches? Thanks and welcome to Minnesota!

Coach Brewster::John, we will visit every single high school in this state in the month of May. With 10 full-time coaches, including myself, recruiting this state, we will focus on the metro schools as well as the outstate schools...hitting every corner of Minnesota.

Kevin:Duluth:Do you have any walkons that have committed? Can you tell us about them?

Coach Brewster::We will have a number of walk-ons, particularly from the state of Minnesota. We are in the process of finalizing that list and once that is finished, we will make that public. We are excited about the group we have put together so far. We expect walk-ons to make great contributions to this program, just like they've done in the past.

Daniel Johnson:Farmington, MO:How do you plan on using you running backs and how will you determine the starter?

Coach Brewster::The best players will play and we will run the football. People think we won’t because of the spread offense, but that won’t be the case. We’re going to be a physical running team.

Art Fuchs:Young America Mn.:Does the thought of a new stadium play into recruiting?

Coach Brewster::Absolutely, Art. I believe that TCF Bank Stadium will be a tremendous asset to our recruiting, to this program and to this state. It will be second to none in terms of facilities in this nation. Everyone we’ve come in contact with this past month is very excited about returning to campus.

Jordan:Yankton, SD:How much fun did you have with your first stint recruiting as a head coach and how was it different than as an assistant coach

Coach Brewster::Great question Jordan. I've been preparing my entire coaching career to get to this point and it's been very, very exciting The thing I’m most proud of is the staff and their ability to recruit. They are relentless and it was great that we were able to work so well together so quickly. I expect great things from these guys in the future.

BRUCE BURTON:SPEARFISH, SD:What do you look for in a QB to run the new spread offense?

Coach Brewster::Tremendous poise and the ability to throw the football are key. He needs to be a great decision-maker.

Trevor:Chaska:With your sone Clint commiting as a quarterback, what does this mean for Adam Webber? Will there be a competition at QB?

Coach Brewster::We've gotten a lot of questions about the quarterback position. Not seeing any of them with the pads on, I can say this. There will be a wide open competition for the quarterback position and the best player will play. We’re looking forward to working with all five of our quarterbacks and seeing which one gives us the best chance to win immediately.

Ryan:Golden Valley:During games will you don a shirt and tie on the sideline a la Joe Paterno, Tommy Bowden, etc? It's a classy gesture and I for one would love to see you spread it through the BigTen!

Coach Brewster::I have thought a little bit about my sideline attire, but I don’t believe it will be a shirt and tie at this point. Thanks for the question Ryan.

Cory:Champlin:Will your current receivers fit into your "spread offense" philosophy, and what characteristics will you be looking for in a receiver in the future?

Coach Brewster::Yes they will fit in to what will do offensively next season. In the future we will look for receivers with speed, can catch the ball and have great concentration.

Doug (from Jersey just like u):Cherry Hill, Nj:Won't the spread offense, due to its large amount of passing, have our defense on the field a lot more? Sad to say, but our running game has actually been our best defense the past few years.

Coach Brewster::Great to hear from you Doug. We’re excited what the spread will allow us to do in the passing game, but we are committed to running the football.

Bill jenkins:Eden Prairie:Which recruit in the 07 class do you think will impact the team immediately?

Coach Brewster::I think all of them have a chance to make an immediate impact in this program. The players that give us the best chance to win football games will play, regardless of class.

Scott:St. Paul:What are your thoughts on the returning Golden Gophers so far? Thanks

Coach Brewster::Great question Scott. I’ve been very impressed. It was a difficult stretch for them following the season, but they’ve worked extremely hard this offseason and are very committed to our goal of winning the Big Ten Championship. I know they can’t wait to get started and I know the coaches can’t wait to get started.

Coach Brewster::Well Gopher Nation, I'm sorry I couldn't get to more questions. I enjoyed spending time with all of you and look forward to seeing you at the Spring game on April 7. Thanks for your incredible support! Go Gophers!
