The University of Minnesota and the McNamara Academic Center for Student-Athletes will hold its annual scholar-athlete awards banquet on Tuesday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m. The event will be held in Memorial Hall in the McNamara Alumni Center.
Minnesota highlights 392 scholar student-athletes this year, 56 of which held a perfect 4.0 grade point average during a semester. The qualification for becoming a scholar-athlete is maintaining a cumulative of 3.0 GPA or higher while participating in intercollegiate athletics at the U. To become a 4.0 semester GPA award winner, student-athletes must hold a 4.0 GPA in either the spring of 2006 or the fall of 2006.
Along with recognizing scholar student-athletes, several awards will be announced as well. Five men and five women student-athletes will receive the Top Five Award, which is given to the top 10 student-athletes who hold intercollegiate athletics’ best GPAs. The Outstanding Achievement Award will also be given out to the man and woman from sport teams that has most demonstrated the NCAA Life Skills: Leadership, Academics, Volunteerism and Athletics. The Team Community Service Awards are presented to one men’s team and one women’s team that have performed the most community service projects as a team during the calendar year. Also announced at the banquet is the McNamara Campus Recognition Award, which is given annually to individuals on campus who have gone above and beyond to help the McNamara Academic Center.
Director Mark Nelson leads a staff of an assistant director (Lisa Nordeen), seven academic counselors, four learning specialists and two representatives of the on-campus Life Skills program.
