Matt Nohelty Named First-Team Academic All-District

Minnesota sophomore outfielder Matt Nohelty (Rothschild, Wis.) was named First-Team Academic All-District according to an announcement on Thursday, May 10. It marks the fourth straight year a Golden Gopher has received First-Team Academic All-District honors.

Nohelty enters the week second on the Golden Gophers in batting average at .371, has 38 runs, 21 RBI and is fourth in the Big Ten in stolen bases with 20. In Big Ten play, he is batting .381 with 19 runs, 10 RBI and seven stolen bases.

Since starting to play as a redshirt freshman in 2006, Nohelty has batted .366 with 71 runs and 38 stolen bases. The Golden Gophers are 53-21 with Nohelty batting out of the leadoff spot over the last two seasons. His 38 stolen bases are also the most in the first two years of a career by a Golden Gopher since Wes Denning had 49 in his firsts two seasons in 1994 and 1995.

Nohelty was named Academic All-Big Ten and was a Minnesota Scholar Athlete last year. Just recently, he was honored as one of the top five male student-athletes academically at the University of Minnesota.

With the First-Team Academic All-District selection, Nohelty qualifies to be an Academic All-American. The Academic All-American team will be named later this month.

The past three years Andy Hunter has received Academic All-American honors and All-District honors. Hunter received second-team honors in 2004 2006, and was a Third-Team Academic All-American in 2005. He was also a three-time Academic All-District honoree.
