Head football coach Tim Brewster helped bring a smile to the faces of the athletes at the 2007 Special Olympics Minnesota Summer Games today by talking with the competitors and handing out medals to the Special Olympians on the medal stand following their performances.
The Special Olympics Summer Games cover three days, concluding tomorrow, Saturday, June 23. For Brewster and members of the Gopher football team, the Special Olympics signify a chance to give back and recognize participants who represent true courage.
“This is phenomenal,” said Brewster. “When you come out here you see the true courage displayed by these young, special athletes. It is just truly amazing. To see the smiles on their faces and the way that they compete, it is a wonderful experience for everybody. I was out here yesterday and again today. Our players have been out here. It is just a way to give back and be a part of something. The Special Olympics may be as good an event as any in the country.”
Special Olympics Minnesota enhances the human potential and quality of life for children and adults with intellectual disabilities by offering year- round sports training and competition. By sharing their joy and courage, our athletes inspire the human spirit in all of us.
More than 1,200 Special Olympics athletes from across the state of Minnesota have taken part in state track & field, volleyball, powerlifting and gymnastics competition. Track & field competition was held today from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the University of Minnesota's Bierman Athletics Complex. Athletes have the support of more than 530 coaches, 1,500 volunteers, as well as family members and friends. All competitions are free and open to the public.
For Brewster and his team, seeing the smiles on the faces of the Special Olympians says it all.
“It is so meaningful when you see the smiles on these young kids’ faces and to see how hard they are competing,” Brewster said. “It sends a great message to our players. This is true love for what they are doing and true competitiveness. It is a win-win for everybody and it is a special day. One of the greatest causes in the country is the Special Olympics and I am proud to be part of it.”
