Former Minnesota lineman Carl Eller led a group of 20 players and coaches who were enshrined today in the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind.
The latest class includes several stars who played in the 1960s like Eller and Purdue quarterback Mike Phipps. Eller joined an impressive class that also included
Florida's Emmitt Smith, Virginia Tech's Bruce Smith and Heisman Trophy winners Charlie Ward of Florida State and Mike Rozier of Nebraska.
"I think it means more just simply because I'm older and can appreciate it more and understand the significance of it," Eller said. "I realize this is quite an honor and achievement and not something I've taken lightly. I'm very appreciative of it."
Eller helped lead the Gophers to a Rose Bowl victory as a sophomore. He became a full-time, two-way player as a junior and senior and was an All-American both years. During his time at Minnesota, the Gophers were both national champions as well as Big Ten champions. As a senior in 1963, Eller was the runner-up for the Outland Trophy.
Eller's enshrinement today follows his election to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
