The Minnesota football program returned from its week-long camp at St. John’s University Saturday and Sunday held its first practice on campus at the team’s outdoor practice facility. The two hour and 20 minute workout was the second of training camp in full pads and the Golden Gophers once again made good use of the time, concentrating on fundamentals as well as drilling in team segments.
Head coach Tim Brewster said he was please with the Gophers’ workout, but indicated he wanted to see more from the team when Minnesota opens two-a-day practices on Monday.
“(Today) was good, but it was not great,” Brewster said. “Obviously there are some things we need to improve on and I made sure (the players) understand that. We’re still in the stage of them understanding what’s acceptable and what’s not.”
Monday’s first two-a-day workout is slated to begin at 9 a.m., with an afternoon practice scheduled to follow at 4:30. Brewster said the challenge of two-a-days is maintaining a strong pace and that he expects the Gophers to continue working at the top of their game.
“(The pace) better stay the same and it better be pretty good,” said Brewster. “That comes from leadership and the leadership on this football team has got to be outstanding. There should not be highs and lows with effort or attitude. We’ve got to keep pushing. We’ve got to stay on the grind every day.”
Minnesota will push through three sets of two-a-day practices on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with single workouts on tap for Tuesday and Thursday. The first scrimmage of training camp is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday at the outdoor training facility. All practices for the remainder of training camp are open and will take place on campus.
